President John Dramani Mahama has announced the formation of a Presidential High-Level Taskforce on Global Health Governance, a bold step aimed at reforming the outdated global health architecture to better reflect Africa’s needs, voices, and innovations.
Speaking at the Africa Health Sovereignty Summit in Accra on Tuesday, August 5, the President emphasized the urgent need for a new health governance system that matches the realities of a multipolar, climate-threatened, and digitally interconnected world.
“Today, I am pleased to announce two significant commitments,” President Mahama said. “First, the Presidential High-Level Taskforce on Global Health Governance – a convening platform to engage global and continental partners to redesign the health governance system for the world we live in now, not the world of yesterday.”
The taskforce will focus on driving the transformation of global health governance by championing democratic, equitable, and inclusive systems that enable Africa to lead with its own vision.

President Mahama’s call comes at a time when global health systems are being tested by overlapping crises; pandemics, climate change, and economic shocks; while Africa continues to grapple with declining donor support and marginal representation in decision-making processes.
“We are here because we choose to lead, reform, heal, and reimagine,” he told participants at the summit. “Africa must no longer be the patient. It must be the author, the architect, and the advocate of its health destiny.”

The taskforce is part of a broader package of reforms and commitments unveiled by President Mahama to strengthen Africa’s leadership in global health, alongside the launch of the SUSTAIN Initiative, a platform to align budgets with health priorities and drive cross-border innovation and accountability.
