The member of the Parliament for the Zebilla East constituency in the Upper East region, Cletus Apul Avoka, has described as unfortunate, the resignation of Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, from Parliament’s Appointments Committee.
Ablakwa resigned from the appointments committee on Tuesday citing personal reasons and on a principle basis.
In a letter to the Speaker of Parliament, Mr Ablakwa said his decision was taken after careful consideration.
He also added that based on his decision, he will be unavailable for the vetting of deputy ministers yet-to-be nominated by President Akufo-Addo.
Speaking on the Morning Starr on Thursday, Mr Avoka who is also the former Majority Leader in Parliament said Ablakwa could have engaged more on his decision before quitting the committee.
“Ablakwa’s resignation from the appointments committee is very unfortunate. He’s a gentleman, he’s a good MP but I don’t think resignation can be said to be the best. I’ll be surprised if more MPs resign from the appointments committee because we have met and ironed out our differences,” Avoka told host Francis Abban.
He, however, added that it will be suicidal for the minority leadership in Parliament to be changed adding that it won’t be in the best interest of the party.
He added that Minority Leader has done a great job and deserves to continue the NDC in Parliament.
“I think that the present NDC caucus has done well. I think if you make a mistake and change the leadership, you divide the caucus forever for the next 4 years…Haruna Iddrisu is a very strong pillar in the NDC. I think that he has his strengths and I don’t think what has happened will hurt his image. We should let wounds heal and then move on.”
