Deputy Finance Minister and Member of Parliament for Asuogyaman, Thomas Nyarko Ampem, has held an Educamp to improve performance in English, Mathematics, and Science among Junior High School learners.

The Ampem Educamp 2025 brought together 400 final-year students from 70 public and private schools across the constituency.

For two weeks, the learners were camped at Akosombo International School, receiving intensive tuition, coaching, and mentoring from subject experts and some retired teachers.

Speaking to the media during the closing ceremony of the Educamp, Hon. Thomas Ampem Nyarko stated that, “Over the last three years, we’ve seen a declining trend in the performance of our children in the BECE. And so I sat with the education directorate and said that we need to do something extra.”

He added, “So, I brought up this idea that we have to motivate the best among the students. So we targeted the best in all the schools. We brought five best from each of the JHS both public and private, to energize them and prepare them for their final year”.

Hon. Thomas Nyarko Ampem believes the Educamp, together with other interventions already in place, will help the students excel.

“All of them are in the second year, and when school resumes in a couple of weeks, they will be going to the final year. Next two weeks or so, we are starting in-service training for all the teachers in their final years in mathematics, English and science”.

He acknowledged support from corporate institutions for Educamp stating that the initiative will be sustained as annual event.

District Director of Education, Augustina Adwoa Owusu, commended the Member of Parliament for his special attention to quality education. She recounted numerous infrastructural projects and support for education in the district.

According to her the new initiative, “Ampem Educamp”, is a novelty that will help change the narrative of poor performance in English, Maths and Science in the district.

“The Educamp 2025 is going to help students and learners in so many ways. First of all, it’s going to improve upon performance in the three core subjects that we took them through because they don’t do well in those subjects, that is Science, Mathematics and English. And I think, come this BECE, we know they are going to improve massively”.

The Eastern Region recorded a 69 percent pass rate in the 2023 BECE.

Guest speaker at the closing ceremony of “Ampem Educamp”, Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, urged other districts and constituencies to replicate the initiative to improve education outcomes across the region.

The event honored outstanding students.

Zoe Kudos Yayra of Akosombo International School emerged Overall Best Student after topping English and Science, while Leslie Nuamah of Crimson Down School was adjudged Best Maths Learner.

Participants were provided free text and exercise books and other educational materials.

The learners were fed throughout the exercise while sanitary pads provided to the females during the beginning of the camping for menstrual hygiene.

The Educamp is expected to become an annual intervention to prepare more learners for academic excellence.
