GPP-2 to save Ghana $500m every two years, strengthen power supply – Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has announced the approval for the construction of a second gas processing plant, GPP-2, which is expected to double Ghana’s national processing capacity and save the country close to 500 million U.S. dollars every two years.

Speaking during a media encounter at the Jubilee House on Wednesday, the President explained that the project marks a major step in his government’s energy and economic recovery agenda, aimed at reducing reliance on expensive imported liquid fuel.

“This milestone brings us closer to increased oil and gas production, job creation, and enhanced energy security, reinforcing our commitment to responsible resource management for the benefit of all Ghanaians. We’ve also approved the construction of a second gas processing plant, GPP-2, to double our national processing capacity and set the stage for cheaper, cleaner, and more reliable power generation.

This landmark project alone is expected to save the country close to 500 million U.S. dollars every two years by drastically cutting our reliance on expensive imported liquid fuel,” President Mahama stated.

Beyond the significant cost savings, the new gas plant is expected to create over 1,000 direct and indirect jobs, providing opportunities across the energy sector, related industries, and local communities.

The President emphasized that the facility will ensure cheaper, cleaner, and more reliable power generation, boosting both household supply and industrial productivity.

According to him, this initiative is a continuation of the government’s commitment to responsible resource management and energy security.

He added that the approval of GPP-2 builds on recent progress in the energy sector, including the Eban Akuma oil and gas discoveries in Cape Three Points Block 4, which have been declared commercially viable.

This, he noted, paves the way for joint venture partners E\&I Vitor Woodfields and the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) to proceed with a full development plan of the oil field.

“We can all attest to the fact that the looming threat of DUMSO we inherited in January this year has been averted. Through strategic interventions and swift action, power supply has remained stable across the country, ensuring uninterrupted electricity for households, businesses, and essential services,” President Mahama affirmed.

The President underscored that the combined effect of these energy sector interventions is not only to guarantee stable power supply but also to strengthen Ghana’s energy independence and position the country for long-term growth.
