The Bank of Ghana (BoG) will officially launch the 60th anniversary celebration of the Ghana Cedi on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, at the Accra International Conference Centre under the theme, “60 Years of the Cedi: A Symbol of Sovereignty, Stability, and Economic Resilience.”
The event will begin at 10:00 a.m. with President John Dramani Mahama as the Special Guest of Honour.
Ghana officially adopted the Cedi as its national currency on July 19, 1965, marking the country’s transition from colonial rule and asserting its economic independence. Since then, the Cedi has undergone various reforms, redesigns, and policy transformations, serving as both a monetary instrument and a symbol of national pride, resilience, and progress.
According to the Bank of Ghana, the Cedi@60 celebration offers a strategic opportunity to reflect on six decades of monetary sovereignty, deepen public understanding of Ghana’s financial journey, and promote pride in the Cedi as a symbol of stability and identity.
“This anniversary allows us to engage the public on the history and future of the Cedi, strengthen financial literacy, and inspire Ghanaians to uphold the integrity of our national currency,” the Bank noted in its statement.
The central bank outlined the goals of the year-long programme, which include commemorating the Cedi’s evolution and its role in national development, educating citizens on proper currency usage and security features, and promoting confidence in Ghana’s monetary system.
The celebrations also seek to engage stakeholders across all regions through inclusive events and public education campaigns, while fostering national pride and financial responsibility.
