Parliament has approved the nomination of Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as Chief Justice following an intense debate between the Majority and Minority caucuses.
The approval, which came after heated exchanges on the floor, saw 163 MPs voting in favour and 69 opposing the motion.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, who has been serving as Acting Chief Justice, was nominated by President John Mahama to replace former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, whose removal is still being challenged in court.
The Minority Caucus, led by Alexander Afenyo-Markin, boycotted the vetting, citing ongoing legal challenges and what they described as procedural breaches in the nomination process.
Despite the walkout, the Majority proceeded with the vetting and subsequently approved the nomination through a vote.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s confirmation marks a new chapter for the judiciary as he officially assumes the role of Ghana’s Chief Justice.
