Ghana has launched a Gun Amnesty programme aimed at reducing the circulation of illicit firearms and curbing violent crime across the country.
According to the Ministry of the Interior, statistics in 2024 showed 1,219 reported robberies and 552 murders, with 628 robberies and 340 murders recorded as of July 2025.
Launching the initiative, the Interior Minister, Muntaka Mubarak, highlighted the urgency of the situation.
“Across our beloved nation, illicit firearms have infiltrated our homes, workplaces, social gatherings, and even our schools.”
Mr. Mubarak noted that these weapons are driving armed robbery, violent disputes, chieftaincy and land conflicts, and domestic violence.
The Minister said the amnesty provides citizens a safe window to surrender illegal firearms.
“It offers every law-abiding Ghanaian who holds an unregistered or illicit firearm the opportunity to surrender it—without fear of interrogation, arrest, or prosecution.”
The Interior Minister also warned that post-amnesty, law enforcement will take strict action:
“Those who refuse this generous offer will be treated as criminals, and the consequences will be firm and uncompromising.”
The Gun Amnesty runs from 1st December 2025 to 15th January 2026, with designated collection points across the country.
