Deputy NDC Communications Officer Godwin Ako Gunn has cautioned that the high levels of unemployment in Ghana could evolve into a national security concern if not addressed promptly.
Speaking on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey, Ako Gunn highlighted the magnitude of joblessness facing the government.
“This issue of unemployment that we inherited… it’s been an endemic problem,” he said.
He pointed to the overwhelming response to recent public recruitment exercises as evidence of the crisis.
“The gold board… advertised for a position for about 500 or 800 people, and the number of people that applied was scary. That was the first point that I got scared with what is ahead of us,” Ako Gunn explained.
The NDC official also recalled fatal incidents linked to military recruitment exercises, emphasizing the human cost of the unemployment challenge.
“Then it was followed by the military recruitment that we had five innocent people losing their lives… may their souls rest in perfect peace,” he said.
Ako Gunn stressed that addressing unemployment must be treated as a priority for national security.
“Within time, we must be able to see this as a national security issue,” he added.
The Mahama administration has introduced initiatives, including a 24-hour economy program, aimed at boosting production and creating sustainable employment opportunities for Ghanaians.
