Playwright and CEO of Globe Productions, Latif Abubakar, has revealed that his celebrated stage production “The Second Coming of Nkrumah” has been transformed into a full musical, set to premiere in Accra on December 29, 2025.

Speaking on Starr Showbiz with Feeling Daddy on Starr 103.5 FM, Abubakar described the upcoming musical as a major milestone for his career and for Ghana’s theatre industry, noting that the production has been repackaged for the international market with the aim of documenting and projecting Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s legacy to global audiences.

According to him, the original play, first staged in 2016, marked his breakthrough after several years of financial and audience challenges.

Commissioned as part of activities marking the 100th anniversary of Nkrumah’s birth, the production attracted huge audiences and became the foundation upon which Globe Productions rebuilt its theatre following.

Abubakar said the new musical version is designed to operate on the scale of a Broadway or West End-style production, describing it as a “blockbuster” that will both entertain and provoke thought while serving as a cultural export tool for Ghana.

“We are packaging it for the international market to cement Nkrumah’s legacy across the globe and to use it as a brand Ghana activation tool,” he said.

The premiere will take place at the Accra International Conference Centre under the African Festival umbrella. Abubakar expressed hope that first-time theatre audiences will be “converted forever” after experiencing the musical.

He added that while the theatre ecosystem continues to face major challenges; particularly limited venues and inadequate funding, the success of The Second Coming of Nkrumah has shown the potential of Ghanaian theatre when given the right support.
