Land preparation has begun for the construction and equipping of a modern 400-bed Mother and Child Block at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
Government Communications Minister, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, announced this in a Facebook post on Monday, September 21, 2026, saying the new facility will replace the hospital’s existing maternity unit.
He said the project forms part of President John Dramani Mahama’s renewed investment in major health infrastructure.
According to Mr Kwakye Ofosu, the facility will provide a comprehensive centre for maternal, child and reproductive healthcare at Korle Bu.
The new block will include specialised obstetrics and gynaecology wards, labour and delivery suites, operating theatres, a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), High Dependency Unit (HDU) and Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
It will also house an In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) and Assisted Reproductive Technology Centre, alongside antenatal and postnatal clinics, fertility and reproductive health clinics, breastfeeding and family planning units, and an Emergency Obstetric Care Unit.
The minister said the project will further provide diagnostic imaging, laboratory and blood bank facilities, pharmacy services and a Central Sterile Services Department.
Physiotherapy and rehabilitation units will also be included, together with teaching, research and conference facilities.
The facility is expected to bring these services together within a modernised centre dedicated to maternal, child and reproductive healthcare at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
