The Vice President, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has described the sexual misconduct allegations against the suspended headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS) as a very serious matter of national concern and urged that the law be allowed to take its course.
Speaking on her return from a working visit, the Vice President said she had followed developments in the case even while abroad and had received reactions from the public.
She noted the actions taken by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) regarding the individual who sought to contest on the party’s ticket, the letter issued by the party’s General Secretary, and the response by the Minister for the Interior at a Public Accounts Committee (PAC) meeting.
“This is a very, very serious matter. It is a matter of concern to all of us, and it is a matter of national concern,” she said.
“What I want to see is that we all allow the law to take its course, because this is a very serious matter, especially as it affects the lives of people, not only in the present, but also going to the future. So let’s allow the law to take its course.”
The remarks come amid ongoing investigations into allegations that the interdicted headmaster, Zakaria Abdulai, sexually abused multiple female students at the school.
The claims gained national attention following an investigative documentary by journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni.
Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu directed Abdulai’s immediate suspension pending investigation, and the Ghana Education Service (GES) interdicted him.
The case has been transferred to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters in Accra.
Interior Minister Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka told Parliament’s PAC that Abdulai had been arrested, had given a statement, and that police were pursuing DNA testing in line with legal procedures.
The NDC’s Functional Executive Committee directed Abdulai to step aside from the Juaben constituency chairmanship race to allow unhindered police investigations.
He subsequently resigned as Juaben Constituency Secretary and withdrew his candidacy, stating he would pursue lawful avenues to clear his name.
