Chief Executive of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Godwin Kudzo Tameklo, has urged the public to desist from collecting petroleum products from overturned tankers and other accident scenes, warning that such actions put lives at risk.
He called on residents to discourage friends and relatives from rushing to accident scenes to scoop spilled fuel, stressing the need for communities to make safety a shared responsibility.
Mr Tameklo gave the warning during the NPA’s 2026 Consumer Week celebration at Kasoa Ofaakor Park in the Central Region, where he highlighted the dangers associated with the unauthorised collection of petroleum products following road accidents.
He noted that decisions taken at accident scenes could have serious consequences not only for those directly involved but also for their families and communities.
The NPA Chief Executive urged the public to resist invitations to collect fuel from damaged tankers and instead leave such situations to the appropriate authorities to manage.
He also encouraged community leaders, transport operators and families to educate residents on the dangers of approaching accident scenes involving petroleum products.
The appeal formed part of the NPA’s broader public safety campaign under the 2026 Consumer Week theme, “Safe Downstream, Confident Consumers.”
The National Petroleum Authority regulates, oversees and monitors Ghana’s downstream petroleum industry to ensure efficient, safe and reliable operations.
