The Accra Regional Police Command has intercepted a private ambulance being used to traffic narcotics in Labadi, Accra.
On Wednesday, September 10, 2025, police acting on sustained surveillance stopped a Hyundai Hiace ambulance with registration number GX 277-20 in front of the Jamboree Drinking Spot at Labadi Maami.

According to a statement, the police, during the operation, arrested Kwame Mananyi Tuanda, 39, who was standing by the vehicle and claimed ownership of both the ambulance and its contents.
A search uncovered several sacks of dried leaves suspected to be cannabis.
Upon further examination, police retrieved 700 parcels and 473 wrappers of dried leaves suspected to be cannabis from the vehicle.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the narcotics had been transported from Kpando in the Volta North Region to Accra for onward distribution. The suspect admitted he had been engaging in the trade since last year.
Investigators also discovered that the suspect had originally purchased the Hyundai Hiace as a regular car before fitting it with a siren and branding it as an ambulance.

Prior to that, the police said, he allegedly used a Toyota Highlander for similar drug-trafficking operations. In addition to transporting narcotics, the suspect reportedly used the vehicle to convey dead bodies.
The ambulance has since been impounded, and the seized substances are being forwarded to the Police Forensic Science Laboratory for analysis.
The suspect is currently in custody and is being processed for court while investigations continue.

The Accra Regional Police Command has cautioned the public against the abuse of legitimate service vehicles for criminal purposes and reaffirmed its commitment to clamp down on drug trafficking across the country.
