The Member of Parliament for Tamale North, Alhassan Suhuyini has questioned the style of the ranking member of the Appointments Committee, Alexander Afenyo-Markin.
Speaking on GHOne TV with Serwaa Amihere, Suhuyini criticized the extended questioning by the ranking member, arguing that it is inappropriate to overstep boundaries simply because there is no limit to the number of questions that can be asked.
Mr. Suhuyini emphasized the importance of discretion in the vetting process, stating that it is guided by law. “I don’t think it is right for the ranking member to go on and on with questioning just because he has the luxury to ask unlimited questions,” Mr. Suhuyini remarked.
According to him, the use of discretion is not only essential but also legally bound by the Constitution, which frowns upon its abuse.
“When people begin to complain about the use of your discretion, then you should ask yourself what you are doing differently,” he added, further stressing that questioning should be purposeful and fair.
Suhuyini pointed out that previous ranking members managed to conduct vetting sessions without such controversy, suggesting that they were able to strike a balance and avoid using their discretion inappropriately.
