President John Dramani Mahama has emphasized the importance of the Accra Reset Initiative as a blueprint for Africa’s economic transformation, urging African nations to take control of their development trajectory.
Addressing the Zambian National Assembly on Thursday, 5 February 2026, Mahama highlighted the continent’s historic struggles and the responsibility of the current generation to turn political liberation into tangible economic gains.
“Our forebears won us independence and nationhood. Now we must win the fight for economic transformation and prosperity for our people,” Mahama said, underlining the urgency of addressing unemployment, fragile health systems, and Africa’s dependence on external actors for security, development, and critical resources.
The Accra Reset, according to Mahama, advocates unity, self-reliance, and leveraging Africa’s comparative advantages to drive industrial growth and economic emancipation.

“The Accra Reset does not seek to disrupt global partnerships. It advocates the forging of new partnerships to transform global systems that have been rigged against Africa and much of the global south for a long time,” he stated.
Mahama also stressed the role of governance and leadership in achieving the initiative’s goals.
He called for transparent, accountable leadership and strong institutions, citing former U.S. President Barack Obama, “Africa does not need strongmen, it needs strong institutions.”
