ActionAid Ghana Celebrates Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyeman as Ghana’s First Female Vice President

ActionAid Ghana (AAG) has extended its heartfelt congratulations to Her Excellency Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyeman on her historic achievement as the first female Vice President of the Republic of Ghana.

In a statement, AAG commended Ghanaians for their peaceful conduct during the 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections, despite isolated incidents of violence. The organization described the successful elections as indicative of Ghana’s commitment to democracy and the broader fight for gender equality in leadership.

“We resolutely stand with like-minded stakeholders in celebrating Her Excellency Prof Naana
Jane Opoku-Agyeman’s historic election as the first female Vice-President of Ghana. This
achievement marks a defining moment in the Fourth Republic of Ghana, and we extend our
strongest commendations upon her assumption of this pivotal role,” portions of the statement read.

AAG praised Prof. Opoku-Agyeman’s powerful commitment to feminist action, referencing her victory speech where she declared, “I’ll hold the door open for others to walk through.”

“As a gender-focused organisation, AAG is proud to acknowledge this milestone, which boldly
represents progress for women’s representation across Ghana. This victory exemplifies our
relentless pursuit of feminist-leadership principles and gender equality in society. We refer to
your victory speech where you eloquently reiterated that “I’ll hold the door open for others to
walk through”, a powerful affirmation of your willingness to work and support the feminist action
cause.”

“At ActionAid Ghana, we firmly believe that your leadership will not only inspire but also
empower women and girls, significantly enhancing their confidence to participate in
governance to improve their dignity and advocate for quality of life. We are optimistic that you
will prioritise the rights of Ghanaians especially that of women and girls in government policies
and programmes. Achieving these high principles of democracy will add value to Ghana’s
democratic credentials and promote social justice for all.”

AAG also extended congratulations to all newly elected female Members of Parliament and commended the gallant female parliamentary candidates who contested but were unsuccessful.

“ActionAid Ghana would also like to use this opportunity to extend our heartfelt congratulations
and well wishes to all newly elected female members of Parliament. Our sincere
congratulations also go to the gallant female Parliamentary candidates who stood for the
elections but couldn’t win. We commend Ghanaians for their belief in and better appreciation
of what women in leadership can do for the overall development of the country.”
