The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has donated GH¢105,000 to assist some needy members of the Volta Region Students’ Association (VORSA) at the University of Ghana, Legon, in settling their fees.
Presenting the support at his office on Tuesday, the Effutu MP urged the beneficiaries to remain focused on their studies despite financial challenges, reminding them that determination and faith could see them through.
“Life has never been easy. It is rough. But with your determination and your faith in God, trust me, no danger can overcome you,” he said.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin drew inspiration from his own background, recounting the hardships he endured as a student.
He recalled walking long distances, struggling to pay fees, and relying on the kindness of others to survive.
“My dad lost his job at 39, and my stepfather, who was active in politics, was demoted and made a watchman. My mother, a pupil teacher, also lost her job. At some point, I had no money at all. But here I am today,” he shared.

He encouraged the students not to lose hope, even in the face of depression or uncertainty. “Please don’t give up. Some of you are depressed and don’t even know it. But take it easy. God has many ways of opening doors. Each day has its own promises,” he advised.
The Minority Leader said the gesture was part of a broader commitment to support young people in education. “I have 33 names here, and the total support for your fees comes up to GH¢105,000. I will hand it over to your leader to ensure transparency. Always knock on my door; this is just the beginning,” he assured.
On behalf of the students, VORSA-Legon President Gideon Senator Xorvi expressed appreciation for both the financial support and the mentorship. He clarified that their association was not politically affiliated.
“People often think we are tied to one political party, but that is not the case. VORSA-Legon is a non-partisan, non-profit group with members across political lines,” he said.
Mr. Xorvi promised that the beneficiaries would uphold the values and lessons imparted by the Minority Leader and work hard to make his support worthwhile.
“We are very grateful for this, and we pray for the gift of life so that this kind of support will continue in the years ahead,” he stressed.
