Residents of Affram plains have vowed to resist any attempt by government to transfer their only ferry to Yeji, to ease pressure at the Yeji dock following ongoing civil works on the Bupei and Yapei bridges in the Northern Region.
According to the residents, the move could put many lives in danger if they have to use canoes to cross the Volta Lake due to poor weather conditions.
The ferry connects the Afram Plains to Kpando-Torkor in the Volta region.
The Buipe and Yapei bridges which carry more than 10,000 cars a day was closed on Tuesday, November 21 by the roads and highways Minister, Kwesi Amoako Atta for repairs.
The Bridges, according to the Minister, has deep cracks which pose serious threat to commuters.
The minister who announced the immediate closure of the bridges said a sag and deep cracks have been created in the middle of the bridges which were very dangerous and poised serious threat to commuters. A month period has been set aside for the damage works and the Minister warned all motorist to staff off the over 238m long bridges.
Speaking to reporters, the minister described the state of the bridge as “scary, frightening” and said the government was being proactive to prevent disaster. He acknowledged the inconveniences caused by the closure but called for road users’ collaborations.
