Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has expressed satisfaction with security arrangements at the ongoing Akwatia by-election, assuring that the process has been largely peaceful and orderly.
Touring polling stations on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, the IGP told journalists that the exercise was proceeding as planned and could serve as a benchmark for future elections in Ghana.
“Everything is going on smoothly as planned, and that is what we expect to do — to make sure that at the end of the day, we have a very smooth and peaceful election,” he said.
He commended the performance of security personnel, revealing that all regional commanders and members of the Police Management Board (POMAB) were deployed on the ground, working alongside officers to ensure maximum visibility.
“I am very satisfied with the performance of my men on the ground. This election is such that we have all regional commanders, all POMAB members taking part on the ground. They are all on the field and working with the personnel. Everything is going on very well,” IGP Yuhuno added.
The by-election, triggered by the death of the constituency’s MP, is being contested across 119 polling stations with 52,328 registered voters expected to cast their ballots.
Although voting has been largely smooth, the polls were briefly disrupted earlier in the day following a heated confrontation between NDC National Vice Chairman Sofo Azorka and his NPP counterpart, Osman Masawudu, at the Akwatia lorry station.
Police swiftly intervened to restore calm, and voting has since continued without major incident.
