Akwatia Police have arrested a man, Coffie Agyemang, for allegedly attempting to sell his three-year-old son for GH¢1 million.
The suspect, a resident of Kwamang in the Denkyembour District of the Eastern Region, was apprehended following intelligence received by officers.
Reports indicate that the suspect confided in a friend about his intention to sell the child due to severe financial difficulties. The friend alerted the police, who quickly launched a covert operation by posing as prospective buyers.
During the operation, negotiations reportedly took place, and an amount of GH¢1 million was allegedly agreed upon. The suspect allegedly brought the child to a prearranged meeting point, where he was arrested by police officers.
Further allegations suggest that the suspect may have intended to kill the child for ritual purposes and later stage the death to appear as though it occurred elsewhere. Police say these claims are part of ongoing investigations.
DSP David Fianko Okyere, Public Relations Officer of the Eastern South Police Command, confirmed the arrest and stated that authorities are working to establish the full circumstances of the case. The child has been placed in protective custody while investigations continue.
Authorities have praised community vigilance, noting that timely reporting and coordinated police action helped prevent potential harm to the child.
