Alhaji Masawudu Osman, the third vice chairperson of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has expressed confidence in the party’s chances of reclaiming the Akwatia parliamentary seat despite recent controversies and political tensions.
Speaking on The Verdict on Starr FM on Tuesday, September 16, Masawudu dismissed claims that political talk is a crime and outlined reasons why the NPP still considers Akwatia a stronghold.
“We saw Akwatia seat as a safe seat for the NPP because it’s a seat that our MP won even though he had challenges when the NDC were pushing him to court,” he said.
The NPP executive also pointed to recent events, including the personal tragedy faced by Ernest Kumi, the party’s parliamentary candidate, as a factor that could influence voter sympathy in the upcoming election.
“We think Akwatia people will look at the sad event that has hit the family of Ernest Kumi so that they may use that as condolences to vote for the NPP,” Masawudu noted.
Beyond sympathy, Masawudu stressed that the party’s developmental record in the constituency remains its strongest card.
The by-election, however, was won by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Bernard Bediako Baidoo, who polled 18,199 votes.
His closest contender, the NPP’s Asumadu, garnered 15,235 votes, while the Liberal Progressive Party’s Owusu Patrick obtained 82 votes.
