Nana Baffour Awuah, lawyer to former National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP) Chief Executive Officer, Kofi Ofosu Nkansah, has criticised the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) over what he described as a politically driven handling of his client’s interrogation.
Mr. Nkansah was picked up by the NIB following comments he made during a radio discussion on alleged irregularities in the award of government-sponsored scholarships for studies abroad.
Speaking on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey on Thursday, February 12, Awuah suggested the arrest and subsequent actions by the BNI were aimed at intimidating his client.
“Without a doubt… it was a powerful hand wanting to teach him a lesson. Somebody was in power that felt uncomfortable that he was let go on Thursday… as a result of his statement on a TV programme,” he said.
The lawyer also issued a warning to members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), urging them to be cautious when invited by security agencies.
“If you are a member of the NPP and are invited by the national investigations bureau… I urge you to exercise your constitutional right of silence. The BNI is not proving to be independent of the NDC based on the circumstance of this matter,” he stated.
Awuah further stressed that suspects should not feel pressured to speak during interrogations and should insist on legal representation, noting that the right to remain silent is guaranteed under the Constitution.
