A sixth and last suspect in the murder of a 55-year-old teacher at Asiakwa Salvation Army Basic School in the Eastern Region has been arrested.

The suspect Aboagye Evans, alias, Otega, 18, was picked up Friday night after returning to the community from his hideout.

He is currently in the custody of the Kibi Police Command.

“I can confirm that Kyebi Police has managed to arrest the sixth suspect. His name is Aboagye Evans alias Otega. He is 18 years. Our strategies have worked perfectly for us. Now all of them have been arrested,” Superintendent Magnus Reinford Sam, the Kibi District Police Commander told Starr News.

The 55-year-old deceased teacher with Asiakwa Salvation Army Basic School, George Somuah Bosompem was brutally assaulted by the six teenagers suspected to be wee smokers leading to his death a few days later.

He was attacked for protesting against smoking of wee and defecation in the school.

Five of the suspects; Richard Amaning,18, Mireku Emmanuel, 17, Philip Okodie,17, and Paul Boadu,18  and the fifth accused person, Ezekiel Boadu,19, arrested at his hideout in Accra have been remanded by the Kibi District Magistrate Court to reappear on May 14, 2019.

The incident has led to the closure of all public schools in the community as teachers embarked on strike ahead of a planned demonstration.

MUSEC wages war against drugs

As a result of the incident, the Abuakwa South Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) has begun a massive clamp down on narcotic drug peddlers and addicts in the municipality particularly, Asiakwa community.

Speaking to Starr News at a Public Durbar participated by Ghana National Association of Teacher, (GNAT), Police, Ghana Education Service (GES), Traditional Rulers, Parents and the youth at Asiakwa community to resolve the impasse, the Abuakwa South MCE, Kojo Ofori Ntori said enough security arrangements have been made to protect teachers in the community, therefore, appealed to them to call off their strike, while in the long term the menace of tramadol and narcotics drug abuse will be dealt with.

However, the Municipal Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Thomas Awiah Oppong said their decision will be reviewed on May 14, 2019, when their National Executives join them at the next court hearing.

“This is the day we were waiting for. When the incident happened our beef was that the entire town kept quiet over it and so we wanted a forum like this just to voice out our displeasure.

“If you lynch us then we have to flex our muscles that is the reason why our general secretary gave the instruction that teachers in the town should sit down until leaders of this town and perhaps district have told us about a good thing happening so today we are happy to hear that they will protect us but as to whether the strike is lifted or not it lies in the mouth of the General Secretary when he comes on Tuesday,” he said.

The Regent of Asiakwa, Nana Agyeman condemned the callous act of the teenagers, assuring the teachers of the Traditional Authority’s commitment to ensure that the incident is not repeated.

The Durbar coincided with the celebration of Global Action Week by the Eastern Regional branch of Ghana National Education Campaign Coalition (GNECC).

The Regional Chairman of GNECC, Haruna Abedi says there is the need to foster a cordial relationship between teachers and the community to ensure harmony to create safe environment for teachers.
