Attacks on journos: The media was lukewarm when I warned of NPP vigilantism – Asiedu Nketia

The National Chairman for National Democratic Congress (NDC), Asiedu Nketia has said he is not surprised about the recent attacks against media houses in the country.

Speaking on Starr Chat on Thursday October 19, 2023, Mr. Nketia stated that now stated that he had warned the media against the New Patriotic Party vigilantism but they were lackadaisical.

“So I am saying that what is happening in the media space, I’ve warned them about this more than three years ago. Because when vigilantism was happening we were complaining. When you go to any studio they will say but you too have Azorka boys, you too have this and that. I said look, we must deal with this problem. But this problem of always siding with one side and trying to justify what is happening.

“When even MPs were presenting petitions to the Electoral Commission, the killings in Techiman, the killings in Odwira and other places. Anytime we talk about it then they defend and say you too you have.  So I kept warning that look it will come to the turn of the media one day. If you don’t help us to stop what is happening it will come to the turn of the media one day. So I am not surprised that it is happening now. If we don’t deal with it now it goes beyond the media and gets to another area where they think they are safe,” the NDC Chairman stated.

Background

On Saturday, October 7, 2023, evening during the broadcast of United Showbiz, a gang purportedly made up of NPP members invaded the UTV studios and demanded the return of Kwame Asare Obeng, alias A Plus, the show’s regular analyst.

The group is claimed to have attacked some media firm employees before entering the studios because they were upset that A Plus destroyed a letter from the NPP leadership to the management of UTV requesting for a reform of United Showbiz.

Few weeks later, a Citifm reporter Akosua Otchere, who was assigned to cover the vetting of some parliamentary aspirants at the NDC Greater Accra Office on Friday, October 13, 2023, was also attacked.

The journalist was attacked during the vetting exercise when some irate supporters vandalized property at the office over claims of bias by the vetting committee.
