The Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has announced that the Ghana National Gas Company will scale up production to 120 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscfd) once ongoing maintenance works at the Atuabo Gas Processing Plant are completed.
The plant was shut down on August 16 for a 10-day routine maintenance exercise, expected to end on August 30, 2025. The works involve critical replacement and servicing of equipment, some of which are being undertaken for the first time since the plant was commissioned.

Inspecting progress at the facility, Mr. Jinapor commended management and staff for their dedication, noting that the team is working round the clock to finish in 10 days, what would normally take 20 to 24 days. He stressed that successful completion will enable the company to increase output from 100 to about 120 mmscfd, describing the boost as a “game-changer” that will cut costs, stabilize power generation, and secure reliable gas supply for industry.
The Minister further disclosed that government is pursuing plans to establish a second gas processing plant (GPP2) to expand capacity and accelerate industrialization. He also pointed to new oil and gas discoveries by Eni, progress by the Jubilee partners, and renewed interest from international oil companies as evidence of a strong rebound in the upstream sector; part of what he called a wider strategy to “reset Ghana Gas on a stronger footing.”
Meanwhile, the Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Gas, Madam Judith Adjobah Blay, provided an update on the works. She revealed that just five days into the exercise, the company had already exceeded its target, completing about 50 percent of the job instead of the projected 40–45 percent.

“We started on August 16 and plan to bring the plant back on by the 26th. At the midway point, we had aimed for about 40 to 45 percent completion, but I’m glad to announce we have achieved about 50 percent. All of us are here 24/7 ensuring that the plant is restored for power generation and industrial use,” Madam Blay said.
She added that Ghana Gas is ready to undertake the next phase of expansion, GPP2, as soon as government gives the green light.
