Africa World Airlines (AWA) Tuesday December 12, 2017, flew its maiden flight from Accra to Monrovia; a journey its management described as an important milestone in their  goal of connecting West Africa.

“The start of a direct service by Africa World Airlines (AWA) between Ghana’s capital Accra and Monrovia will deepen trade relations between the two countries and also offer our cherished passengers the opportunity to connect with ease,” the Chief Executive Officer of AWA, John Quan said in a statement.

He said AWA will operate a thrice-weekly service between Accra and Monrovia. The flights will be on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays departing at 11:30am and arriving at 1:30pm.

The return flight will depart Monrovia at 2:10pm and arrive in Accra at 4:10pm, he added.

He said “four more routes, Abidjan, Dakar, Freetown and Banjul are under consideration and feasibility is underway to extend our world class service to these West African Countries.”

Co-Chairman of AWA, Togbe Afede XIV

Addressing journalists in Monrovia after the AWA flight 324 touched down at the Roberts International Airport, the Co-Chairman of AWA, Togbe Afede XIV said the recent move was borne out of the desire to integrate and develop the continent stressing “AWA’s aim is to ensure that Africans move seamlessly across Africa.”

He said AWA flying into Monrovia will be used as a launch pad to hit the world.

Deputy Aviation Minister of Ghana, Kwabena Okyere Darko

On his part, the deputy Aviation Minister of Ghana, Kwabena Okyere Darko said AWA’s entry into the Liberian aviation sector “marks an important milestone for both Ghana and Liberia in the area of air transport.”

“I’m therefore delighted to be part of this auspicious occasion and it seeks to strengthen the bond of friendship between Ghana and Liberia and the mutual development of our country,” he said.

Also, he said the operations of AWA in Liberia are in recognition of the relevance sections of the Chicago convention which among other things indulges sovereign countries to sign bilateral air service agreement.

He further noted that the move is significantly in sync with the government’s decision to encourage and support local airlines and entrepreneurs stating that it will in no doubt improve the two nations’ economic fortunes.
