Ayine’s suit could scuttle Amidu’s appointment – NDC MP

A member of the Appointments Committee of Parliament, Eric Opoku, has warned the suit challenging the eligibility of Martin Amidu’s nomination as Special Prosecutor due to his age could scuttle his appointment, despite receiving unanimous approval from the Committee.

A former deputy Attorney General Dr. Dominic Ayine on February 12 sued the State challenging the eligibility of Mr. Amidu’s nomination.

Dr. Ayine, who is the National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP for Bolgatanga East, prayed the Supreme Court to declare as null and void the nomination because 66-year-old Mr. Amidu is gone past the retirement age for public office holders.

This was contained in a seven-pointer reliefs in which he further prayed the Court among other things: “In the event Martin Amidu has already been vetted and approved by Parliament and /or appointed by His Excellency the President of the Republic as the Special Prosecutor under Section 13(3) of the Office of the Special Prosecutor Act 2018 (Act 959) prior to the final determination of this suit, an order annulling such nomination, approval and appointment.”

Mr. Amidu has already been approved unanimously by the Appointments Committee of Parliament, Starr News has learnt.

The approval, according to credible sources, was made hours after the almost nine-hour grilling of the former attorney general.

Speaking Wednesday in an interview with Starr News’ Parliamentary Correspondent Ibrahim Alhassan, Mr. Opoku said despite the committee’s unanimous approval of Mr. Amidu’s nomination, the suit by Dr. Ayine could hamper his appointment.

“…But whatever it is having gone through the process a decision must be made. We have done that. But there is a matter pending before court. It is up to the court to make a determination and the outcome of that case will have some consequences on whatever happens,” said the Member of Parliament for Asunafo South.
