The Ghana Education Service (GES) has temporarily closed down schools affected by recent violent incidents in the Upper East Region, following confirmed reports of attacks on Bawku SHS, Nalerigu SHS, and Zuarungu SHS between 20th and 26th July 2025.
The incidents, which led to the tragic loss of student lives, injuries, and damage to school property, have severely disrupted academic activities and caused widespread distress among students, families, and school staff. The GES, in a statement dated 29th July, condemned the violence in the strongest terms and expressed condolences to bereaved families and affected communities.
In response to the crisis, the GES is working with the Ministry of Education, WAEC, regional and district directors, and school leaders to ensure SHS 3 students can sit for the 2025 WASSCE under safe and fair conditions. Plans for special examination arrangements and secure centres are currently under consideration.
For SHS 1 and 2 students, the GES is exploring alternative learning avenues to ensure lesson continuity while safety assessments are conducted on the affected campuses. Details on these interventions will be communicated in due course.
Additionally, counselling services are being strengthened for both students and staff to help manage the psychological impact of the events.
The statement also commended the Ministry of Interior for the swift evacuation of students and affirmed continued collaboration with security agencies to enhance safety on campuses.
The GES called on community leaders, parents, law enforcement, and all stakeholders to support efforts in maintaining peace and discipline within educational institutions.
