Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo has ordered the shutting of seven courts around Bawku, including several others in nearby communities.
The courts affected by this decision are the High Court and Circuit Court in Bolgatanga, as well as the District Courts in Zuarungu, Zebilla, Garu, and Bongo.
This closure follows the recent conflict in Bawku, which has been intensified by the presence of Seidu Abagre, who was controversially enskinned as the Bawku Naba in February 2023.
Though his title lacks legal acknowledgment, his involvement has intensified existing tensions among the rival tribes, resulting in numerous violent confrontations and the tragic loss of 16 lives.
The Judicial Secretary on October 29, released a statement explaining that the closures are aimed at protecting the well-being of judges, court staff, lawyers, and people in the court system. The Chief Justice’s order has been applied immediately and will go on in place until further notice.
The statement highlighted the significance of maintaining a safe environment for those who operate within the courts. Consequently, it instructed registrars to ensure that all court assets were properly managed and protected throughout this period.
In addition to asset management, all court staff have been advised to focus on their safety within the ongoing conflicts. The closures reflect a serious concern for security in an environment that has become increasingly unstable.
As the ongoing riot in Bawku continues to evolve, the judiciary has taken these safety measures to protect its staff and maintain the integrity of the legal system in the region.
