Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has emerged as the favourite to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) into the 2028 general elections, according to the latest National Tracking Poll by Global InfoAnalytics in September 2025.

The poll shows that 57% of NPP delegates prefer Bawumia as the party’s next flagbearer. His closest rival, Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, secured 29%. Other aspirants, including former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko, recorded less than 5% each.

In the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), the race to succeed President John Dramani Mahama after his second term remains tight. The survey placed Haruna Iddrisu ahead with 32%, followed by Cassiel Ato Forson with 28% and Julius Debrah with 25%.

Global InfoAnalytics also tested possible 2028 general election matchups. The findings show that Bawumia would defeat Julius Debrah in a head-to-head contest, but would lose to Haruna Iddrisu and Cassiel Ato Forson.

The survey revealed strong regional variations in support for the NPP aspirants:

• In the Ashanti Region, Bawumia led with 63%, while Kennedy Agyapong followed with 25%.

• In the Eastern Region, Bawumia secured 61%, compared to Agyapong’s 27%.

• In Greater Accra, Bawumia had 55%, with Agyapong at 30%.

• In the Central Region, Bawumia polled 52%, while Agyapong had 34%.

• In the Northern Region, Bawumia topped with 68%, against Agyapong’s 22%.

Support for the NDC aspirants was more evenly distributed:

• In the Northern Region, Haruna Iddrisu led with 45%, followed by Julius Debrah with 28%, and Cassiel Ato Forson with 20%.

• In the Central Region, Ato Forson had the edge with 40%, Julius Debrah followed with 32%, and Haruna Iddrisu polled 18%.

• In Greater Accra, Julius Debrah led with 38%, while Ato Forson had 30% and Haruna Iddrisu 25%.

• In the Volta Region, Haruna Iddrisu polled 41%, Ato Forson had 34%, and Julius Debrah 19%.

• In the Ashanti Region, Haruna Iddrisu had 35%, Julius Debrah 33%, and Ato Forson 27%.

The poll comes against the backdrop of the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 general elections, when John Dramani Mahama returned to power on the ticket of the NDC.

The NPP lost both the presidency and its parliamentary majority. Its seats in Parliament dropped from 137 in 2020 to about 88 in 2024, giving the NDC control of the legislature.

The party also recorded sharp declines in votes across several key regions. In Greater Accra, NPP’s votes fell by nearly 46% compared to 2020. In the Central Region, it lost 18 out of 23 parliamentary seats to the NDC. Even in the Ashanti Region, its traditional stronghold, NPP’s votes dropped by about 24%.

These setbacks have left the party searching for a new leader to rebuild its fortunes ahead of 2028.

The Global InfoAnalytics survey was conducted between September 15 and 25, 2025, with a sample size of over 5,000 respondents and a margin of error of ±2.5%.
