Blogger Samuel Amadotor of Dklassgh.net has been released on bail of GH¢50,000 with two sureties after an Accra Circuit Court approved his request, following claims that he circulated false information about former National Communications Authority (NCA) Board Chair, Okatakye Boakye Danquah Ababio I.
Presiding Judge Evelyn Asamoah outlined two charges against Amadotor: publishing false news with the intent to cause fear and panic, under Section 208(1) of the Criminal Offences Act (Act 29), and publication of false news as defined in Section 123 of the Electronic Transactions Act (Act 772). Amadotor pleaded not guilty to both counts.
The court granted bail after hearing submissions from both the prosecution and defence, although no detailed explanation was provided for the decision.
Speaking after the ruling, Amadotor’s lawyer, Jerry Avenorgbo, welcomed the development.
Amadotor was arrested following a complaint by Mr. Ababio, who alleged that the blogger published videos and stories online that tarnished his reputation.
Police say that during questioning, Amadotor admitted to posting the material and claimed he was contracted by an individual identified as Chairman Michael Yeboah.
Authorities are reportedly seeking to locate Yeboah to continue the investigation.
The case is set to continue as the court schedules further proceedings to examine the merits of the allegations.
The arrest has sparked debate among some Ghanaians and institutions, who argue that a civil suit for defamation would have been more appropriate.
Critics say the police action raises concerns over freedom of speech and the treatment of journalists and bloggers in Ghana.
