A group of agitated youths in the Agona East District of the Central Region have staged a protest against the appointment of Hannah Asamoah, the 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate for the constituency, as Acting Principal of the Agona Swedru Technical Institute (ASTI).
The appointment follows the suspension of the previous principal over allegations of misappropriating funds collected from parents.
Speaking to GHOne News during the protest, some of the demonstrators expressed concern that Ms. Asamoah’s political affiliation with the NPP compromises the neutrality required for the leadership of the institution.
They argued that her appointment could politicize the administration of the school, calling on President John Dramani Mahama, the Minister of Education, and the Ghana TVET Service to review the decision.
The Ghana TVET Service recently sanctioned the heads of three technical institutes for allegedly collecting unauthorized fees from parents.
In the meantime, Ms. Asamoah, who serves as the Central Regional Coordinator for TVET, was appointed to act as caretaker of ASTI pending the outcome of investigations.
Despite this, the protesting youths insist that her political background makes her appointment inappropriate and are urging authorities to rescind it immediately.
