About 6,200 teachers who have worked between six and nine months without pay are set to receive long-awaited relief, following Cabinet approval for their immediate absorption into the Ghana Education Service.
This was disclosed by Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu when speaking at the press launch of the 2025 Triennale of the Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA),
The affected teachers, who have worked between six and nine months without pay, had staged demonstrations at the Ministry of Finance and the GES to demand their long-overdue remuneration.
Mr. Iddrisu explained that the approval is part of the government’s commitment to fully engaging trained educators to enhance learning outcomes nationwide.
“A few weeks ago, myself and Chief Director received a petition from some teachers who are unhappy with the government over their unending work for a number of months without their pay. I’m happy to announce that Cabinet has given approval for the 6,200 teachers to be absorbed. We’ll begin the process in due course,” he said.
The Minister added that the teachers will be issued GES identification cards and assured them that back pay will be provided, emphasizing that the government recognizes their service without waiting for protests or demonstrations.
“So those 6,200 teachers, I think I can speak for both ministries in this matter. Cabinet gave the finance approval to via budget and spend about 1.1 billion Ghana cedis to absorb a category of health workers and teachers. The process will start soon and therefore no more picketing,” he added.
The approval marks a significant step in resolving salary disputes and ensures that the teachers will now be formally integrated into the GES payroll, bringing stability to the sector.
