Catholic Bishop of Yamoussoukro Encourages Ghanaian Youth to Be “Pilgrims of Hope”

In a spirit-filled encounter at the Basilica of Our Lady of Peace in Yamoussoukro, the Catholic Bishop of the Diocese, Most Rev. Joseph Kakou Aka welcomed young pilgrims from Ghana with an inspiring address on faith, discipleship, and courage in the face of uncertainty.

The pilgrims, drawn from the Accra Archdiocese and the Koforidua, Keta-Akatsi, and Ho Dioceses, arrived at the world’s largest church as part of the Youth Summit Pilgrimage themed “Pilgrims of Hope: A Year of Discipleship”, anchored on Romans 5:5.

Rev. Fr. Alphonse Bulloro, the Youth Chaplain of the Accra Archdiocese, introduced the Bishop, appreciated the moment as the prelate took time off to share moments with the pilgrims.
In his address, the Bishop welcomed the young people urging them to embrace their identity not merely as travellers but as seekers of divine purpose.

“The theme that brings us together – ‘Pilgrims of Hope: A Year of Discipleship’ – is not just a spiritual slogan. It is a call, a vocation, and even a way.” the bishop noted.

He described the pilgrim as “one who walks with heaven as his horizon,” and commended the youth for choosing spiritual growth over worldly distraction.

“In a world often marked by confusion, lies and fear of the future, your pilgrimage is a living testimony,” he said.

“It tells the world that you are not resigned. You still believe – and you dare to hope.”

Touching on the virtue of hope, the Bishop reminded the pilgrims that it is not just an emotion, but “an anchor for the soul.”

The Bishop challenged the young pilgrims to embrace the demands of discipleship with trust and joy. The prelate then commissioned the youth to be change agents in Ghana.

“Ghana needs young people who reject corruption, violence and indifference,” he added.

“Christ wants to work through you to lift up hearts, to console the wounded, to build a civilisation of peace and justice.”

In a gesture of gratitude, the Bishop was warmly thanked by the Accra Archdiocesan Youth Chairman and Secretary, who expressed profound appreciation for the warm welcome and spiritual encouragement.

The visit to the Basilica formed part of a larger 5-day pilgrimage to Ivory Coast involving Masses, cultural exchanges, visits to sacred sites, and reflections on the Catholic faith and youth mission.
