Chairman Wontumi slams Kodua Frimpong over ‘misconstrued’ comments

Ashanti NPP Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako has dismissed claims by General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong that he dragged the party’s National Council into his public engagements, stressing his focus was on history and strategies for a 2028 Bawumia victory.

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as ‘Chairman Wontumi’ has dismissed claims by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, asserting that he dragged the party’s National Council into his recent public engagements.

In a statement dated Sunday, September 28, 2025, Chairman Wontumi clarified that his remarks centered on the history of the NPP and strategies for reclaiming power in the 2028 elections, not on the National Council.

“Throughout my engagement with people, I have never dragged in the name of our National Council and that is easily verifiable from videos shared online. For the avoidance of doubt, I touched on the history of our party and how it can position us to win back power in 2028 with Dr Bawumia,” he stated.

Citing lessons from the party’s past, Wontumi compared the circumstances of former President John Agyekum Kufuor’s campaigns in 1996 and 2000 to the NPP’s current situation with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

According to him, just as Kufuor needed an additional 11% to secure victory in 2000, Dr. Bawumia requires about 9% to win the 2028 polls.

“My position as Ashanti regional Chairman of the NPP, places me closer to the people who tell me about the direction the party should be considering in recapturing power. This was clearly manifested in my engagement with them. The National Council of the NPP never featured in any of the statement I made to the people,” he stressed.

He further expressed disappointment in the General Secretary for acting on what he described as propaganda and misconstrued commentary instead of seeking direct clarification.

“It is unfortunate Mr. Justin Kodua Frimpong has fallen for a propaganda seeking to misconstrue my statement. There is no justice in the way he has gone about the matter,” Wontumi added.

The Ashanti Regional Chairman urged unity within the party as it positions itself to contest and recapture power in the 2028 general elections.
