Deputy Attorney-General Dr Justice Srem-Sai has revealed that Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, is the subject of an active criminal investigation by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). The charges under investigation include fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering.
In a post on social media, Dr Srem-Sai stated that the probe is “a criminal investigation running concurrently with asset recovery proceedings aimed at preventing dissipation of what law enforcement agencies strongly suspect to be proceeds of crime.”
He further revealed that the investigation extends beyond Ghana’s borders.
“The suspect is also under a second strand of investigation which is part of a larger international organised crime scheme,” he wrote, adding that “EOCO is assiduously working with our international law enforcement partners on this second strand.”
Wontumi, who serves as the NPP’s Ashanti Regional Chairman was arrested by EOCO on May 27, 2025, shortly after appearing before the Criminal Investigations Department (CID). Though granted bail set at GH₵50 million with two sureties, he has not yet met the conditions and remains in EOCO custody.
On Thursday, May 29, 2025, Minority Members of Parliament boycotted proceedings in Parliament and marched to EOCO’s headquarters in Accra in protest. They sat on the floor of the EOCO premises for nearly two hours, demanding Wontumi’s release. According to the MPs, the arrest was politically motivated and the bail conditions were deliberately punitive.
Meanwhile, EOCO has maintained its silence on the political fallout.
