President John Dramani Mahama has announced that his government will soon launch a ‘Clean Beaches’ initiative aimed at ensuring a cleaner environment and protecting marine life across Ghanaian shores.
Speaking during the National Fisheries Day celebrations, President Mahama explained that the initiative will employ people, including the children of local communities, to clean the beaches, with participants receiving a monthly allowance. “You can give us your children, we’ll employ them to help clean the beaches for us and we’ll pay them a monthly allowance,” he said.
The President also reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening the fishing industry through infrastructure development. As part of these efforts, two new fish markets are set to be established, one in Dambai in the Oti Region, and another in the Sharma District. He further acknowledged a request for a Greater Accra fish market, assuring that it will receive favourable consideration.

President Mahama added that artisanal fishers remain exempted from the closed-season fishing period but urged them to adhere strictly to regulations. “As you are aware, artisanal fishers have been exempted from the closed season. So I encourage you to reciprocate by not doing anything illegal during the closed season,” he said.
Additionally, the government is in the process of acquiring two new offshore patrol vessels for the Ghana Navy to improve the monitoring and protection of the nation’s marine resources.
