Deputy Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, Professor Smile Gavua Dzisi, says opportunities in the digital economy are vast, and insists Computer Science graduates, in particular, have no excuse to be unemployed.
According to the Ghana Statistical Service, over 22 percent of unemployed persons in 2023 had completed tertiary education.
Concerned by the trend, Prof. Dzisi said Computer Science programmes are designed not just for academics, but also for entrepreneurship; equipping students with the practical skills needed to build their own tech ventures.
“Computer Science is well blended, integrated with entrepreneurship. So, we always make sure that students are able to start their own businesses in the tech space right after school”. Prof. Smile Gavua Dzisi explained.
She added, “They are encouraged right after school to start developing their own ideas, entrepreneurial ventures and what have you. So, there’s no way you can complete this school, this Computer Science Department at Koforidua Technical University, be sitting idle in the house. So, we have inspired and encouraged these students to be bold, to be courageous, making use of the opportunity that is offered to them in Technical University Computer Science Department, so that they can be able to create jobs and employ others as well, instead of sitting at home waiting for government to employ them”.
