The High Court in Accra has issued a bench warrant for the arrest of the Director of Passports for failing to comply with a court order to appear and explain the issuance of multiple passports to an accused individual standing trial.
The court’s investigation revealed that the accused person has multiple passports, prompting the court to seek clarification on the matter.
Despite evidence showing that the court documents were served, the Director of Passports or their accredited officer failed to appear in court to provide assistance.
Justice Marie-Louise Simmons ruled that the Director’s absence demonstrated disrespect for the court, necessitating the issuance of a bench warrant.
The warrant requires the Director to be produced in court upon arrest.
“In the circumstances of such disrespect for the court, a bench warrant is issued for the arrest of the Director of passport to be produce in court anytime he is arrested,” Justice Marie Louise-Simmons.
