The Minority in Parliament has warned that the country’s health system will soon collapse as a result of the overwhelming cases of Covid-19.
The Ghana Medical Association has disclosed that the country’s health facilities are at a tipping point regarding the management of coronavirus cases with deaths rising.
In an interview with Starr News a medical Doctor and minority member of the health committee, Dr. Sebastian Sandaare accused the government of gagging technical persons on the frontline from speaking freely to the precarious situation the nation finds itself in.
Dr. Sandaare charged the President to as a matter of urgency abandon his Covid-19 team which he argues is partisan and assemble another one with a national character to assist rescuing the country from the crisis.
COVID-19 deaths in Ghana have risen to 66 from 58 since the last count on Tuesday, June 16, 2020.
The development means 8 patients have died in less than 24hours.
Confirmed cases of the virus have also moved to 12,590 from 12,193 while recoveries now stand at 4,410.
Meanwhile, Hospitals in the Ashanti region have been overwhelmed by the increasing numbers of COVID-19 cases as the death toll in the region rises to 38 with 2,275 cases reported.
Doctors in the region have complained about the inadequacy of PPE to protect medical staff and patients alike.
Also, due to the high number of people reporting to the centres with Covid-19 symptoms from community spread, accident and emergency wards have been turned into isolation centres with little or no protection.
Detailing the burden on the healthcare system in the region, Ashanti Regional Chairman of the Ghana Medical Association, Dr Kwesi Baidoo told Francis Abban on the Morning Starr that the GMA has been providing PPE for their members, which he says is inadequate.
“It’s not the duty of the GMA to provide PPE for our members, but we do it,” he said.
