Telcos MTN and Vodafone have received free spectrum for three months from government in a bid to ease pressure on them amid the lockdown in Greater Accra and Greater Kumasi.
Due to the ‘stay at home’ order by the President, there has been an increase in data use, hence the need for these networks to have more bandwidth.
Communication Minister Ursula Owusu-Ekuful made this known at a Covid-19 press briefing held at the Information Ministry today.
She however noted that AirtelTigo had sufficient spectrum and did not need any more.
She indicated that the President has directed that the NCA should give more bandwidth to telcos during this period for free and that has been done.
She said “that has been given to the two telcos that are bearing the brunt of it; Vodafone and MTN.”
“AirtelTigo has a sufficient spectrum so Vodafone and MTN have been given the additional spectrum for three months because we do need to reserve some for emergencies like this and so we can’t give them permanently.”
The Minister is optimistic that the move “will help reduce the pressure on their networks.”
She however urged Ghanaians to conserve data they use by limiting the download of movies, music and avoid unnecessary video calls.
