The former National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Samuel Ofoso Ampofo, has accused Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) of selective activism, only speaking out against the winner-takes-all system when the NDC is in office.
Speaking on Starr Chat with Bola Ray, Dr. Ampofo criticized the hypocrisy of these organizations, which speak out against the winner-takes-all system when the NDC is in power but remain silent when the party is in opposition.
He emphasized the need for a hybrid system, citing examples from Nigeria and India, where opposition parties can still hold significant power and influence.
“Unfortunately, when NDC was in power, various non-governmental organizations and then the think tanks and others, religious bodies and others, were all speaking against winner-takes-all. At the moment NDC is in opposition, everybody is quiet, not talking about winner-takes-all again,” Dr. Ampofo observed.
He believes that the winner-takes-all system is “inimical to the sociopolitical development of our country” and urged that “we need to take a second look at it.”
Dr. Ampofo’s comments highlight the need for a more nuanced approach to Ghana’s political system, one that allows for greater representation and influence from opposition parties. According to him, as the country continues to grow and develop, it is essential to re-examine the winner-takes-all system and consider alternative models that promote greater inclusivity and accountability.
“When you’re in a position, it becomes very challenging,” he added.
