President John Dramani Mahama has emphasised the critical need to combat misinformation and disinformation as part of efforts to strengthen national cohesion and preserve Ghana’s democracy.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the post-election evaluation conference organised by the National Peace Council in Koforidua on Friday, July 4, President Mahama identified misinformation as one of the central issues affecting democratic health and social unity in the country.
He said the themes discussed at the conference; including electoral integrity, trust, post-election violence, misinformation and disinformation, accountability, governance, youth engagement, and media responsibility; were all vital to the future of Ghana’s democratic architecture.
“These themes are central to the health and future of our democracy,” President Mahama stated. He urged that the outcomes and recommendations from the deliberations must be formally submitted to relevant bodies, including the ongoing Constitutional Review Committee, for implementation.
President Mahama described national dialogue as a necessary step to reducing tensions, promoting mutual understanding, and fostering shared commitment among Ghanaians of different backgrounds.
“This national dialogue, bringing together political parties, religious and social sector actors, is timely and necessary. Because through dialogue we cultivate mutual understanding, we reduce tensions, and create shared commitments toward the Ghana we all desire,” he said.

He cautioned that democracy cannot thrive in an environment clouded by falsehoods, suspicion, and exclusion. Instead, he called for deliberate reforms to reflect the aspirations of the people, foster inclusive governance, and build public trust in democratic institutions.
“As President of the Republic, I reaffirm my unwavering commitment to strengthening our democracy, preserving our peace, and upholding the dignity of every Ghanaian,” he assured.
