Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has called for urgent government intervention to improve safety on the Volta Lake through the mass distribution of life jackets to surrounding communities.
Speaking on StarrChat with Bola Ray on Thursday, June 19, Dafeamekpor said the time had come for Ghana to adopt a clear national strategy to protect the lives of residents in districts bordering the lake.
“The nation is awake and thinking of how; for instance, by way of social intervention policy; we can purchase life jackets and distribute to the other 52 districts that abut the Volta Lake, and 54 constituencies that are dotted around it,” he stated.

The MP noted that until just three days ago, Ghana lacked a coherent national policy addressing the recurring safety challenges associated with the Volta Lake. He said recent events had finally pushed the issue to the forefront of parliamentary discussion.
Dafeamekpor stressed that incidents on the lake should no longer be treated as isolated cases, and urged swift, coordinated action from government agencies and lawmakers to protect the thousands who rely on the lake for transportation and their daily livelihoods.
