The Ga-Adangbe Council has called on the government to deal with the root cause of head-porters popularly known as ‘Kayeyei’ in the big cities across the country.
According to the Council, the government must rather look at how to solve the migration of the Kayayei from their various regions by providing them with skill training.
Members of the Ga Traditional Council want the unauthorized construction of a hostel for head porters (Kayayei) in the capital, Accra to stop immediately.
A statement signed by King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, Ga Mantse, and President of the Ga Traditional Council, noted that the Council has not been contacted nor has it been engaged in prior discussions on the establishment of the facility at Agbogbloshie.
It thus served notice that any person or group that wishes to proceed with the hostel project for “Kayayei”, should seek a new site outside the city.
Commenting on the issue on Morning Starr with Francis Abban, the President of the Ga-Adangbe Council, Mr. Ayikoi Otoo indicated that the government must find a better way of dealing with the issues of Kayayei in the cities.
“It was when we got there yesterday that the foreman told us that the ground floor is to be used as a training center and the other floors are to be used as hostels. It was not part of it, all we know was that they are going to build hostels for them.
“They come with no skills, they only come with head pans to start their business. Why should they stay here, if they have difficulties why can’t they go to where they are coming from? The foreman never mentioned Kayeyei, what he said was the vulnerable. He made it broader. We are doing this for the vulnerable in society. The promise we have always heard is hostels. That is what we promised to give them,” Mr. Otoo stated.
