The Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rt. Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye has reiterated the importance of justice in maintaining peace during the upcoming 2024 general elections.
Speaking at the 24th General Assembly of the church, held at the Ramseyer Training Centre in Abetifi, Kwahu, he called for an incident-free election and urged the Electoral Commission (EC), as well as political party leaders, to commit to a transparent, fair, and peaceful electoral process.
“Peace will only thrive in a state of justice,” Rt. Rev. Dr. Kwakye declared. He continued, “We call on the Electoral Commission to be transparent, and on political party leaders to ensure that their public utterances are devoid of personal attacks, inciting and divisive language, and disinformation.”
The Moderator further urged political parties to focus on issue-based campaigns, warning against the promotion of violence. “Political campaigns should be conducted in a peaceful manner, centered on sharing ideas. Violence must not be promoted. Indeed, we all look forward to a violence-free election,” he stated.
The comments by the Moderator come amid concerns raised by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), which has refused to sign any peace declaration ahead of the election, citing unresolved incidents of killings in the 2020 elections.
During the General assembly, which was themed “Celebrating Our Heritage: Persisting in Missions,” Rt. Rev. Dr. Kwakye also took the opportunity to officially congratulate Prof. Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang on her re-election as the running mate for the NDC.
“We congratulate you, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, on your selection as the running mate of the flagbearer of the NDC. This is the second time you have been chosen by His Excellency the former President, and we believe it is a testimony to the trust and confidence he has in you. It is our prayer that the Lord will guide you in all your endeavors,” the Moderator said.
Prof. Opoku Agyemang, who attended the event on behalf of opposition National Democratic Congress flagbearer John Dramani Mahama, reiterated the party’s commitment to rescuing Ghana from its current challenges.
Drawing a parallel with the Biblical story in Genesis 18, where God intervened to save the righteous.
She said God was concerned about the ordinary people who were righteous, just as the NDC cares about the welfare of the ordinary Ghanaian.
