The Ministry of Transport has urged the Ghanaians public to disregard any purported increase in public transport fares in the country effective Wednesday January 22, 2024.
The Commercial Transport Operators Of Ghana in a press release dated January 16, 2024 announced that a 30% increment in transportation fares throughout the country effective Monday January 22,2024.
According to them, the move has become necessary due to the substantial rise in the costs of lubricants, spare parts coupled with increment on DVLA service charges, which has significantly impacted the livelihoods of drivers across Ghana.
“We in the public transportation sector have been grappling with mounting expenses, making it increasingly challenging to sustain our operations. The continuous surge in lubricant prices, driven by fluctuations in global oil markets, has resulted in a considerable burden on drivers who rely heavily on oil to keep our vehicles running efficiently,” the Transport Operators added.
But the Ministry of Transport says no such agreement has been reached yet.
“We wish to inform the general public that there has not been any negotiation with the transport operators for a review of the transport fares.
“We therefore urge the general public to disregard the purported increase. When it becomes necessary for such negotiations and the decision are taken, the general public will be appropriately informed, as has been done in the past,” the Public Relation Unit of the Ministry indicated.
