Don’t allow Afenyo-Markin hide behind Parliamentary Immunity to evade contempt, sanction him – Jantuah urges Speaker

The CPP stalwart accuses Minority Leader of hiding behind the parliamentary immunity to evade contempt.

A leading member of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Kwame Jantuah, has accused the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, of hiding behind parliamentary privileges to escape the legal consequences of his recent utterances about a Circuit court judge

Speaking on GHOne TV’s Morning Show, GH Today on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, Mr. Jantuah expressed disappointment over the incident and called on the Speaker of Parliament to take decisive disciplinary action against the lawmaker for bringing the image of the legislature into disrepute.

“He’s hiding under parliamentary privilege…because he knows that if he’s cited for contempt, he can stand behind parliamentary privilege because it says if a parliamentarian is in the line of duty, you cannot stop him,” he said.

Mr. Jantuah further expressed dismay at the members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) who have risen to the defense of the Majority Leader, arguing that political loyalty should not blind party faithful to clear wrongdoing.

“I’m very sad that NPP people do not see that what he said is wrong…because most times, when politicians do things that aren’t right, or that have a question mark, we should all be able to condemn it if it’s wrong and all be able to praise them if it’s right. Not because the person is our party person,” he said.

Drawing a parallel between the Minority Leader’s statements and previous controversial remarks made by the NPP’s Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe (popularly known as Abronye DC), Mr. Jantuah noted that such rhetoric has no place in parliamentary leadership.

“Listening to what he said, I don’t understand it. And he’s repeated exactly what Abronye said,” Jantuah remarked.

The private Legal Practitioner further challenged the leadership of Parliament to protect the sanctity of the institution by punishing the infraction.

“For me, the Speaker should sanction Afenyo-Markin for bringing the house into disrepute by his words. He should. He should,” he emphasized.
