Doctors at the Eastern Regional Hospital in Koforidua have amputated the right hand of a 13-year-old female student who was among the victims of a fatal crash involving Ben Konadu SDA School on the Adukrom-Aseseeso-Somanya highway in the Eastern Region.
Meanwhile, a 14 year old boy and a male adult are currently in the intensive care unit as their conditions have deteriorated.
All 7 admitted in Somanya District Hospital have been discharged.
There are 7 other victims currently at Tetteh Quarshie Memorial Hospital on admission, out of the 15 that were admitted on the day of the accident.
Eight have been treated and discharged .
The leaderships of both SDA church and School from Konongo and Accra have visited the victims.
The incident occurred in the morning of Friday March 28,2025 when a bus with registration number GV 83-22 transporting 65 schoolchildren, teachers, and parents of Ben Konadu SDA Basic School in Konongo -Odumase in Ashanti Region on an excursion to Akosombo veered off the road , somersaulted and crashed into ditch.
Two persons including a child and an adult died on the spot.
Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, who was en route to an event at Mount Mary College of Education, stopped her convoy to assist in the rescue efforts. She later followed up at the Yilo Krobo District Hospital and provided food and drinks to the discharged victims.
The exact cause of the accident remains unclear, but eyewitnesses suspect the driver may have been unfamiliar with the road and lost control while navigating a sharp curve while descending a hill.
That particular stretch is notorious for fatal accidents due to the absence of adequate warning signs for unfamiliar drivers.
Last year, a staff member of Koforidua SECTECH lost his life, while many others sustained injuries in a bus crash at the same location.
Two female teachers also died in a similar accident at the same spot in 2023.
