Calm has returned to Akyem Kukurantumi in the Eastern Region after angry youth attacked the local police station following the death of a suspect in custody.
Security was restored on Sunday morning after National Security operatives and police reinforcements intervened to disperse the protesters.
The unrest was triggered by the death of Bright Kena, popularly known as *B-Ball*, who was arrested during a swoop for allegedly possessing substances suspected to be marijuana.
News of his passing sparked outrage, with residents accusing police of fatally brutalizing him.
In protest, the youth stormed the police station, compelling officers on duty to flee. The mob vandalized property, smashing glass windows, chairs, and tables.
Police have, however, refuted claims that the station was set ablaze, insisting the damage, though extensive, did not involve fire.
The deceased’s body has since been transferred to the Eastern Regional Hospital for autopsy, as investigations into the circumstances of his death continue.
Authorities say security has been heightened in the community to forestall any further disturbances.
